Buddy Program

Program Goal – To promote cross-cultural understanding

Even for Thai students new to Bangkok it can be difficult for them to find their way around the City of Angels and to learn about their new environment. For international students, this can be a special challenge, not only because of the language barrier, but also because of the many customs and traditions important to Thai society.

The ECIA offers a support program, called the Buddy Program, in order to assist and provide advice to newly-arrived international students as they begin their studies. In the program, KU local students give practical help to our foreign international students with regard to a wide variety of matters, such as learning how to use the MRT/BTS and local transportation systems, about campus and student life, and something about the many social and
cultural venues in Thailand. The purpose is to provide practical individual assistance from another student.

The Buddy Program is currently offered by the Faculty of Economics, Center of International Affairs. Any student (bachelor program, master program, Ph.D. program, and student exchange students) taking classes in the Faculty of Economics is eligible to participate. The participation is free of charge.

The Buddy Program is not a language exchange/study program. However, students from all parts of the world come to Kasetsart University. Normally, the communication among the Buddies takes place in English and Thai, but the Buddy Program does provide a great opportunity for each student to practice speaking other foreign languages – Japanese, German, Finnish, French, etc. For more information, please check with our website

Objectives and Benefits

  • Assist international foreign students as they begin their studies
  • Volunteer in a meaningful way
  • Provide cultural guidance and learn about other cultures
  • Create new professional contacts (often long-lasting friendships)
  • Expand intercultural competence
  • Deepen language skills

The Buddies are Thai students, they are not professional tour guides and experts. They have volunteered to support their fellow international students as they start their studies and settle into daily life in Bangkok. As a Buddy, no specific knowledge or formal training is required. A Buddy:

  • Enjoys meeting and spending time with students from foreign countries
  • Is reliable and will to commit some time to meet with your Buddy
  • Able and willing to exchange contact information
  • Will attend the Welcome Event and plan at least one

Buddies should expect to share the costs of social outings. At first, the Buddies will be invited to a “Welcome Luncheon - Meet & Greet.” After that, the program is designed by the Buddies collaboratively. Additional optional social and cultural programs sponsored by the ECIA may be announced.
